Coolaney Utd were formed in 1975 and a lot of the credit for the very
existence of the team must go down to the late Brendan Cuddy RIP.
Coolaney`s first game was an away game against Maugherow Utd and they
were beaten by four goals to one. The early years were tough and we were
happy with a few points a season. Our first manager was Michael Monaghan
and the wheel has went full circle as he returned in the 1999 season to
lead the team into the millennium.
Other people to have filled the managerial seat with distinction were
the following. Noel Farry, Pat Maye, Gerry Keaney, Charlie Church, Gerry
Mulvaney , John McKeon and Gus Gilligan and also Kenneth O Connor.
Gerry Mulvaney and Seamus Doyle were to lead the team to their first
Championship the 94/95 season. Even greater success was to follow in the
96/97 season when John McKeon led the team to the Premier League Title.
Brendan Taffee and Marty Gormley kept the team in the Premier division
from 2000 to 2001 Marty Gormley and Brian McDermott took over for the
next season but Coolaney dropped into the first Division.
For the 2003/2004 season Coolaney entered two teams in the League with
Jerry O Grady at the helm of the second string. While it gave younger
players a chance it proved a daunting task and they gave a good account
of themselves.
In the 2004/2005 season Coolaney survived the drop to the bottom
division only by goal difference. Jerry O'Grady was nominated for the
referee's merit award after taking the reins for the second half of the
season.
Noel Farry returned once more to manage the team for the 2005/2006 and
2006/2007 season. While no titles were won, an appearance in the Frank
Kennedy Memorial Cup final resulted in a narrow 3-2 defeat to Quayside
Rovers and the first trophies for a decade.
Alwyn Love, assisted by Fergal Davey, has been handed the reins for the
2007/2008 season.
